Petra Kvitova's surgeon says an operation on her hand has been a success and that she could return to top level tennis in six months.

The two-time Wimbledon champion was attacked with a knife by an intruder at her home in the Czech Republic.

Kvitova will start slow rehabilitation in six to eight weeks.

"The best case scenario is that Petra will be able to return to the tennis court after six months," her surgeon was quoted in a statement as concluding regarding her return to competitive tennis.

"It is too soon to specify when she precisely she can return to competition, but Petra is ready to do everything she can to get back competing at the highest level."
