In terms of timing, it was almost perfect from Rory McIlroy. 

With the 2018 Masters just around the corner, getting his first tournament victory since 2016 on Sunday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational after an outstanding final round of 64 including five birdies in his final six holes.

As the former world No 1 finds form, we were joined by Paul McGinley and the former Team Europe Ryder Cup captain was impressed by the way McIlroy finished his round.

"What a way to finish," he said.

"That's going to give him a huge amount of confidence and we all know how good his long game is from tee to green - a lot of question marks over his putting, a lot of work being done on his putting and now to see it evidenced there, I think that was his best putting performance ever since he's gone professional. It's pretty impressive."

McGinley analysed putting and explained that for most golfers, the approach is 20% science and 80% feel in terms of getting it spot on.

"Rory is a very charismatic player in terms of how he plays. He doesn't play golf in a scientific way the way that somebody like Justin Rose would. So what we had seen from Rory so far this year was he was trying to be a scientist on the green. An artist from tee to green and then getting around the greens and trying to be a bit of a scientist and he's taken those structures that he's put in place from a science point of view and then added in the freedom that he obviously got." 

He also highlighted the key role Brad Faxon has played in regards to working on his putting.
