Former Chelsea defender Paddy Mulligan believes it is imperative that the club keeps hold of captain John Terry.

Terry has reiterated that he expects to leave this summer with no new contract offer on the horizon for now.

But with a potentially serious injury to youngster Kurt Zouma against Manchester United yesterday, it may lead the London club to extend veteran Terry's deal.

Former Ireland international defender, Paddy, says that is only one reason why it is of "paramount importance" that Chelsea should hold onto their most experienced player.

"John Terry should not be allowed to leave Chelsea under no circumstances, and particularly now, when himself and Zouma have a very good relationship on the field. Zouma is learning everything from John Terry and you have to keep the likes of Terry at your club, at least for the next season as a player," he said, adding that the Blues captain can be an example to the younger players on the pitch - past transgressions notwithstanding.
