Over 120,000 Irish fans travelled to football matches in Britain last year

The Republic of Ireland accounted for around 15% of football tourists in Britain last year.

New figures released by VisitBritain shows that over 800,000 fans travelled to top tier games in 2014, with Ireland being the most popular nation of tourists sending 120,000 fans.

Norway (93,000), Sweden (58,000) and the United States (53,000) were the next three most popular on the list.

Unsurprisingly, Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium at the top of the table in terms of stadiums visited by tourists for matches with 109,000 going to each. Anfield came third with 99,000.

Thousands of Irish fans travel across by the Irish Sea by boat and air each weekend to see their team play and day packages are becoming ever more popular to entice Irish fans to games in England and Scotland.
