Penalty shootouts can be nervy encounters for goalkeepers. One save could make them into a hero and be forever remembered by their fans. Very rarely do they reach heroic status for scoring the winning goal in a shootout.

That's what happened last night to Portland Timbers goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey scored the winner in a dramatic penalty shootout against Sporting Kansas City. The game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 after extra time.

All 20 outfield players took a penalty in the shootout to leave the score at 6-6 before Kwarasey beat his fellow goalkeeper Tim Melia to give Portland a 7-6 lead before saving Melia's following penalty to guarantee the win for Portland.

What makes the win more astounding is that Sporting Kansas City's Saad Abdul-Salaam has a chance to win the game in the shooutout only for his penalty to somehow hit both posts and not go in.
