World Number One Novak Djokovic won the second US Open of his career in the early hours of this morning defeating Roger Federer in four sets at Flushing Meadows.

It's the third time in a row Djokovic has defeated the Swiss star in a Grand Slam final as Federer's wait for his first win in one of the sports majors continues back to the 2012 Wimbledon Championships.

Djokovic's defence won the day as he was able to save 23 break points against the World Number Two. In a match that lasted three hours and 20 minutes, Djokovic won 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 under the New York lights. The record between the two men now stands at 21-21 after 42 matches.

After his win, the Serbian said;  “I have to share my admiration for Roger, everything he’s still doing for tennis. It was a tough one tonight. I have a tremendous respect for Roger, an incredible record.”

Despite the loss, Federer was very gracious in defeat.  "I’ve had a wonderful two weeks, very happy with my tennis. I enjoyed it and thought it was a great match. It’s been a good rivalry, maybe not tonight. I think we walk away from it knowing more about our games and more about ourselves.”
