The NFL and the organisation behind England's Aviva Premiership are set to jointly back a professional rugby union league in the USA.

As part of the preparations, London Irish will play a team of US Barbarians in Boston, consisting of internationals and promising young players. The match will take place in August.

A six team competition on the US East Coast could be established as early as 2014. It is also believed that the organisers are hoping to entice New Englanders of Irish heritage in order to make the plan viable.
