Defending champions New Zealand have announced their 31-man squad for the upcoming Rugby World Cup with some notable omissions.

Fijian born powerhouse Waisake Naholo is included but Israel Dagg and Cory Jane are among those to miss out.

Full-back Dagg and winger Jane were in the All Blacks’ side for their 8-7 victory over France in the 2011 World Cup final but will not be part of the team’s defence this year.

The All Blacks, the world’s top-ranked side, are favourites to retain their crown this year despite surrendering their Rugby Championship title to Australia this month.

However, with no country ever having won back-to-back World Cups, head coach Hansen will be keen to manage expectations in his homeland.

New Zealand squad for 2015 Rugby World Cup:

Forwards (17): Dane Coles, Keven Mealamu, Codie Taylor, Wyatt Crockett, Charlie Faumuina, Ben Franks, Owen Franks, Tony Woodcock, Brodie Retallick, Luke Romano, Samuel Whitelock, Sam Cane, Jerome Kaino, Richie McCaw (captain), Liam Messam, Kieran Read, Victor Vito.

Backs (14): Tawera Kerr-Barlow, TJ Perenara, Aaron Smith, Beauden Barrett, Dan Carter, Colin Slade, Malakai Fekitoa, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Sonny Bill Williams, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Waisake Naholo, Julian Savea, Ben Smith.
