A horse jockey has died after falling during a race in New Zealand.

Rebecca Black was riding in the eighth race of the day at Gore Racecourse, when her horse knuckled and fell close to the 700m mark. Black is believed to have collided with fellow jockey Terry Moseley who reportedly escaped serious injury although the horse Misscattlecreek had to be euthanised.

Police confirmed her death shortly after 4pm and the rest of the races at the meeting were cancelled. A police spokeswoman said the death will be referred to the coroner and police are preparing a report. WorkSafe New Zealand have also been advised about the incident.

Black rode 108 winners throughout her career and is a mother of three. It's understood that two of her children were at the racecourse at the time of the accident.
