The World Number 2 carded a 3-over par 73, the same as his playing partner Tiger Woods.
Masters champion Adam Scott is the third member of that group and he is on 2-over par.
Phil Mickelson has regained the lead before he even starts his second round after overnight leader Luke Donald dropped 2 shots this morning to card a 2-under par 68.
Donald will be in one of the first groups to start their second rounds.
Meanwhile, Graeme McDowell double-bogeyed the 18th this morning to post a 6-over par 76, while Darren Clarke finish-up on 10 over.
Waterford's Kevin Phelan resumes later this evening from 1 over, while Padraig Harrington starts on 3 over.
