One of the most common sights GAA fans get to witness is Michael Murphy pointing frees from a variety of distances and angles.

The Donegal captain was in town to launch Under Armour’s new footwear innovation Speedform Apollo and that's where Ger and Joe caught up with the sharpshooter.

The lads asked him who his childhood free-taking inspirations were and he responded with a certain St Eunan's club man.

"At that stage the player was Brendan Devenney. At the time he was the free-taker for Donegal, himself and Adrian Sweeney. He would have been someone I'd always look up to and I just enjoyed the way he played the game and in fairness I get the free-taking style with the hands because the big question you had to ask yourself was from the hands or off the ground," said Murphy who has moved back to Donegal after four years living in Dublin.

After a chastening 2013, Donegal will be hoping to get back on track in this year's Championship and Murphy hinted that his county had taken note of the footballing style which won out in last year's All Ireland.

"There seems to be an emphasis now on forward play and getting scores on the board. But I still think teams are trying to defend. It's a whole balancing act and to put it as bluntly as possible, it's trying to score more than the opposition and concede less, and it's whatever way you can come up with the right balance," said Murphy.

"You can do that with a load of men up front, or a load in midfield or at the back. That's probably going to be the variance this year."

Murphy also feels the black card has been "positive" thus far and "taken out the real cynical stuff", to create more fast-flowing matches.
