David Meyler was the man savouring the last laugh in a thrilling Wembley encounter between Hull City and Sheffield United today, as the Irishman scored the eighth goal of the game to seal Hull’s passage to their first ever FA Cup final.
A 5-3 win for Steve Bruce’s side saw them weather a storm or two from their League One rivals, falling behind 2-1 in the first half. They responded well, however, scoring 4 in the second half, including Meyler’s late contribution to the cause.
Sheffield United took the lead through Jose Baxter before Yannick Sagbo equalised for Hull. The league one side were back ahead when Stefan Scougall scored their second.
Hull City were quickly back in control in the second half, as sub Matt Fryatt scored on 49 minutes and Tom Huddlestone scored an excellent run and finish effort before Stephen Quinn made it 4-2 to the Premier League side.
There looked to be another twist when Jamie Murphy scored for Sheffield United in the last minute of the game, but Meyler was to put Hull hearts at ease with a smart low finish to wrap the game up and book a spot in the May 17 final with Arsenal.
