Europe are within striking distance of retaining the Ryder Cup, currently needing just 2 ½ points from the final nine matches.

Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell have both won their matches, with both performances impressive for different reasons. McIlroy was the picture of dominance as he raced into a five point hole lead over Ricky Fowler by the sixth, with four birdies and an eagle giving Fowler little chance. McIlroy maintained that lead until the end, winning 5&4.

McDowell pulled of f a truly remarkable comeback to take his point. The Northern Irishman trailed Jordan Speith by four at one point but turned the match around to win 2&1.
