As the naming of the Ryder Cup captains for the next tournament approaches, Darren Clarke is the favourite to take the position for Europe.

Indeed "it would be crazy" if that did not occur according to The Irish Independent's golf correspondent Karl McGinty who spoke to Off The Ball tonight.

Previous captain Paul McGinley is likely to vote for Clarke and McGinty says any differences between the two are now in the past.

"They had a meeting in China and they sorted out their differences. I think Paul will also be steered by the good of the team," said McGinty, who also spoke about Clarke's temperament and how it would impact on his captaincy.

One of the other candidates is Miguel Angel Jimenez, but although he has huge admiration for the experienced Spanish pro, McGinty's feels his English might not be of the standard required to fulfil the role adequately.
