The 44-year-old actor and Brazilian model Camila Alves walked down the aisle in June 2012 after meeting in 2006. Together they have sons Levi and Livingston and daughter Vida.
While admitting he was happy with his former girlfriends, which include Sandra Bullock and Penélope Cruz, Matthew felt his relationship with Camila was so special that he wanted to be sure before taking things forward.
"I had some wonderful women in my life," he told British newspaper The Daily Express. "But I was in no rush. When I married I intended to stay married. I did not want to make a mistake."
Matthew credits his mother Mary Kathleen 'Kay' - fondly nicknamed K-Mac - for helping him learn how to treat women the right way. The handsome star still speaks to his mom once a week and shared the advice she and his father James passed down to him.
"She also taught me to look at life as if it were a rose in a vase, something beautiful. If I woke in a grumpy mood she'd come up and hit me on the side of the head," he mused.
"She would say, 'You can go back down that hallway and start over'. I would have to go back to my room and begin the day again. My dad also had simple rules. He would say, 'Don't lie and don't say 'I can't'. We had tough love in our family."
Now a parent himself, Matthew always makes sure to put his kids first. He believes fatherhood helped him become more mature and hopes his little ones will grow up with a happy childhood like he had.
"It helps being an older parent," he added. "I had to grow up for them and for me. I enjoyed family life and want the same for them."
