David Meyler has withdrawn from the Ireland squad for Wednesday’s friendly against Poland. Republic of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli said that Giovanni Trapatonni had contacted Everton’s Darron Gibson this morning, following the news on Meyler, but Gibson had declined the request, citing injury.

“We spoke with Darron. Darron spoke with us and he told us that he played just one match and he prefers to stay home because he is not available and has a little problem after the match.”

Gibson has recently returned to club action following an injury, making two appearances for Everton, with one as a substitute.

When asked if Gibson would be selected for the next international squad, for the World Cup qualifying games against Sweden and Austria, Tardelli told reporters, “Yeah, it’s possible.”

It remains unclear what Darron Gibson’s intentions are regarding a return to the Ireland squad, however it looks likely he will have the option available to him. Gibson has not played for Ireland since before Euro 2012. The midfielder made himself unavailable for selection for future squads after the tournament, during which he made no appearance.

Ciaran Clark and Shane Long both sat out training today, although both are expected to take part in tomorrow’s session. Tardelli told reporters that Long was rested following playing 90 minutes yesterday for West Brom against Tottenham, while Clark was nursing a minor knock.
