Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic has been banned for four European games for his red card in the 1-1 draw with FC Basel in the Champions League in December.

Markovic was adjudged to have struck Behrang Safari in the face during the game, although replays appeared to show he made little if any contact.

The midfielder was certain to face a one game suspension, but a UEFA disciplinary committee has extended that to four games.

With Markovic at last finding his feet following his move to Anfield last summer, this will prove a significant blow to Brendan Roddgers’ side as they chase the Europa League.
