One of Bray's greatest ever athletes has reached into his pocket to help his local side.

WWE NXT superstar Finn Balor has donated to Bray Wanderers GoFundMe page ahead of the resumption of the SSE Airtricity League season.

The Seagulls had only managed to play two First Division matches before the season was suspended as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clubs around the country have been forced to get creative as they look to make up the shortfall from four months with no gate receipts.

Helped by Westlife star Mark Feehily among others, Sligo Rovers have so far managed to raise over €70,000, after setting an initial goal of €50,000.

Bray's target is a more modest €30,000, but any monies raised are no less crucial.

"Our players and backroom teams have all made huge sacrifices during this period to ensure the club's survival for which we are extremely grateful," Bray say in their plea.

The seaside club say there will be a significant financial burden as they try and bring their Carlisle Grounds home up to HSE standards.

"Primarily we must ensure that the Carlisle Grounds are safe for the return of football with many new measures to be introduced to comply with COVID-19 related health and safety guidelines to ensure hygiene standards and allow for suitable social distancing as with any workplace," they add.

"This is to ensure the safety of players, management, officials, volunteers and hopefully for the return of supporters (dependent on HSE guidelines).

"This will involve modifications to various facilities throughout the stadium including dressing rooms, medical room as well as cleaning procedures."

They've been helped in their initial push by NXT Superstar, and the WWE's first ever Universal champion - Finn Balor.

Real name Fergal Devitt, the gifted wrestler made a huge name for himself in Japan before signing to the WWE in 2014.

Balor has donated €500 to the Bray cause, with the club thanking him for "his incredibly generous donation".

Details of the Bray GoFundMe can be found here.
