David Lingmerth heads into the weekend leading the Memorial Tournament after Friday’s flawless second round seven under par on the Muirfield Village course.

The Swedish hopeful shot an opening round five under par, but his exhibition on Friday afternoon saw him pull away from the star studded field in Ohio, on a 12 under par total of 132.

A bogey free second round and seven birdies - three of which were consecutive on the seventh, eighth and ninth hole - were enough to hold the lead heading into a highly competitive third round.

The 27-year-old eradicated opening round mistakes and was feeling confident heading into the weekend.

“I started giving myself some opportunities and the putts started dropping in," he said. "All of a sudden I just started playing the way I know I can."

Lingmerth is still without an elusive maiden PGA Tour victory and was recently forced to regain his tour card at the Web.com Tour Finals after finishing 134th in last year’s FedExCup standings.

Andy Sullivan and Ryan Moore are currently tied for third position on nine under par, whereas Jason Dufner - who shot an ace on the 201-yard 16th - lies just a solitary stroke behind on 11 under par.

Elsewhere, Tiger Woods continued his US Open preparation as he scraped into the weekends final rounds by a single shot.
