Munster’s victory over Toulouse in yesterday’s Heineken Cup Quarter Final has come at a cost with Limerick and Cork City’s Airtircity League fixture at the stadium having to be postponed because the pitch ‘requires remedial work’.

The Munster derby between Limerick and table toppers Cork City was scheduled for Monday night but a statement from the FAI explains the decision to postpone the game was taken in the interest of player safety following damage done during Munster’s win yesterday.

The FAI statement explained the need for repair work to be undertaken immediately: “Because this work cannot be done in time to facilitate the playing of a midweek SSE Airtricity League fixture, the Limerick v Cork City match has had to be postponed. A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.”

Limerick F.C. made their own announcement on the issue, saying the pitch needs ‘lengthy, expert attention’:

"Following Munster’s thrilling victory on Saturday afternoon an assessment of the pitch was undertaken; the high intensity of the rugby game has impacted the pitch in a number of areas. These areas require lengthy, expert attention.

"Unfortunately, despite a genuine willingness on the part of Thomond Park ground and operations staff to work significant additional hours ahead of Monday’s scheduled game, we had to collectively face the reality that the proximity of the Limerick FC match did not allow enough time to bring the surface to a safe standard.

"In the interest of the safety of both sets of players and in the interest of saving both sets of supporters unnecessary travel plans and cost, we sought an early decision from the FAI and are appreciative of their support and feedback over the weekend."
