The much-maligned Mario Balotelli had a positive impact for Liverpool as he scored his second goal for the club.
And it was crucial goal in the grand scheme of things as it came in the guise of a late equaliser against Swansea.
Liverpool had trailed 1 - 0 at Anfield after Marvin Emnes had put Swansea in front.
But Balotelli guided a Fabio Borini pass into the net in the last five minutes, before centre-back Dejan Lovren scored a late winner with his head to put the Reds through to the next round at the death.
Shrewsbury 1 - 2 Chelsea
A goal from Didier Drogba and an own goal from Jermaine Grandison proved to be a difference as Chelsea edged into the next round of the Capital One Cup.
Drogba had given the Blues the lead shortly after half-time but his effort was cancelled out by substitute Andy Mangan with just 13 minutes to go.
However, Grandinson put a Willian cross into his own net to put Chelsea through.
In Derby's 5 - 2 win at Fulham, one of the goals from Ireland midfielder Jeff Hendrick as the Midlands club battled from 2 -1 down to claim victory.
West Brom also slumped to a defeat at Championship Bournemouth, while Sheffield United who reached last season's FA Cup semi overturned a 1 - 0 lead to beat MK Dons.
