Manchester City remain 12 points behind Manchester United at the top of the table after a 2 - 0 win over Chelsea at the Etihad.
After a goalless first half, Chelsea could have taken the lead when Demba Ba was brought down in the box by City keeper Joe Hart.
But Hart turned from villain to hero when he saved the resulting spot kick from Frank Lampard.
And ten minutes later the Blues were punished when Yaya Toure burst into the box and swept past Petr Cech.
City made sure of the win with five minutes to go when Carlos Tevez blasted past the Czech stopper.
Chelsea stay third but could drop down to fourth if Tottenham beat West Ham tomorrow. Ominously Arsenal are now just two points behind Chelsea.
In the other 1.30pm kick off, Newcastle beat Southampton 4 - 2 with goals from Moussa Sissoko, a Papiss Cisse screamer, a Yohan Cabaye penalty and Jos Hooiveld own goal.
Morgan Schneiderlin and Rickie Lambert scored for the Saints.
