Justin Rose won his first ever Major last night and also ended a 43 year barren run for English golfers at the US Open.

The 32-year-old carded a final round 70 to edge out overnight leader Phil Mickelson by two strokes as he finished on one over for the tournament.

Australian Jason Day was four shots off the leader at the rain-affected Merion course.

Meanwhile Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were well off the pace, on 13 and 14 over par respectively.

But it was a happier and emotional achievement for Rose on Father's Day as he admitted that, while sinking the final putt, he was thinking of his dad who had passed away from leukemia 11 years ago.

For Mickelson however there was a sense of frustration as he finished as a runner up at the US Open for the sixth time in 14 years. The American has never won the tournament and admitted the latest narrow miss was "tough to swallow".
