Jon Walters has just agreed to a new two-and-a-half year contract with Stoke City, meaning the man who scored Ireland's one and only goal against Poland last month will remain with the Potters until the end of the 2018 season.

This is a remarkable result to come from Walter's protracted contract negotiations with the club, considering that Walters was close to leaving them during the summer transfer window. The club however, would not accept a £1.5million offer from Norwich City.

Contract talks with Stoke hit a stumbling block when the club refused Walters a two-year extension on account of a policy which does not allow them to offer two year contracts to players over 32 years of age.

But the club announced today that the contract has been finalised. The 31 year-old has been with Stoke since 2010 and has hit two goals from seven Premier League appearances so far this season.

Stoke will host Chelsea at the Britannia stadium later this evening with a 5.30pm kick-off.
