John Giles believes Chelsea captain John Terry has been on the end of "shabby" treatment from his club with major doubts over the London side's willingness to offer him a new contract.

Speaking to Off The Ball, John feels the 35-year-old should be treated better by the club, having been a loyal servant for so long.

"I think when he kisses the badge, he really means it. I think it's very, very shabby of Chelsea to let this go, that Terry's made the statement himself and now I think they're drawing back," said John, who expects Terry to go America and believes he is a little past his best to a degree.

"I'd say he'll be hurt by this, badly hurt, that he's given everything for the club - nothing to do with money. Why not do it properly? Pull him to one side and have a chat with him and say 'we'll make you an ambassador, you're not involved in the playing side, but you've been a great player for us', instead of letting it get to a stage where he must have been so frustrated that he released it himself."

John also gave his take on Manchester City's appointment of Pep Guardiola, backing the Bayern Munich manager to be a success when he joins this summer.
