Normally when a new manager is brought in, the team lifts its game and earns a good result.

That did not happen for Tottenham last night in the Capital One Cup defeat to West Ham as interim boss Tim Sherwood took over from the sacked Andre Villas Boas.

Sherwood believes he should be in the running to replace AVB.

But according to Ireland legend John Giles on his Thursday Night Football slot on Off The Ball, Sherwood should not be in the running for the job because he "doesn't have the CV for the job."

But Giles believes that finding a new manager is not even the most important task for the club.

He is very critical of the Director of Football structure at Spurs which sees transfer decisions made by a committee made up of Franco Baldini, chairman Daniel Levy and the manager, rather than the system used by Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger.

"There shouldn't be a committee to pick the players. The manager should be given a budget and he should be able to dictate who stays and who goes at the club," said John.

"The first thing they have to do is to forget about who they're going to appoint as manager. They have to make a decision - and Levy is the boss there - that whoever they employ is in charge of who is coming and going at the club. There is no point appointing someone like Laudrup if you have a Director of Football and Levy in a committee to pick the players or the staff.

"When Harry Redknapp was manager at Spurs, they didn't have a director of football. Redknapp picked the players and the team. They finished fourth, fifth, fourth and he was unlucky to be sacked. When he was sacked, Levy immediately appointed a director of football and changed the whole policy of the club. Look where they are now. They are in a mess again. People like Levy don't want to give the power to the manager ultimately. That's why they appointed Villas Boas as the 'chief coach'. Levy knows nothing about football. Why doesn't he and Baldini manage the team themselves?"

Having said that, John did not have sympathy for AVB because he signed up to the management model which ultimately hindered him.

But Giles had sympathy for Steve Clarke who was sacked by West Brom and also reiterated that Arsenal have the best midfield depth in the Premier League despite the heavy defeat to Manchester City.

And he was asked about this photo by a texter. John (on the left) remembered that night in the 70s which saw him and his Leeds United team-mates taking part in a charity panto. He even recalled needing a few bacardi and cokes before going on...
