John Giles feels that Ireland's inability to maintain possession at international level is not a question of football culture.

The Boys in Green picked up a 2-2 draw in Belgrade against an unimpressive Serbia side and retreated back after taking an early lead.

On the issue of Ireland's inability to keep the ball, which is a long-term trend, he feels it can be improved by players taking responsibility and not dropping back too far down the field so regularly.

"The pitches are the same. The balls are the same, the goals are the same size for every country that plays the game," he emphasised.

"When we played against Italy for example and played well and deserved to win and France for long spells of the game, was that Irish culture? Who's culture was that? That was our culture. It's not an Irish thing."
