Not for the first time, Jose Mourinho has been openly critical of his options in the forward department.
But John Giles believes the self-styled Special One's public utterances could end up being self-destructive.
He told us: "I've never seen it work where you criticize your players publicly and get a good reaction from it. Last week his criticism of the players - and his strikers in particular - was pretty severe. How can you be full of confidence after getting a lashing only a few days before," said John, citing Matt Busby as a good example of man-management.
"You don't know how the likes of Cahill and Terry as a group will react. A lot of players don't like to see their team-mates criticized heavily. You can get a poor reaction to that.
"It's a funny situation. He has said things in the past, not quite as critical as that where people say that's Jose with his mind games. He's been famous for his mind games. Now we're in a situation where people are saying that maybe his mind games are destructive to the team."
John also talked dressing room punch-ups following the incident involving West Brom's Saido Berahino and discussed whether James McCarthy would have been a better signing for Manchester United than midfielder Marouane Fellaini who he replaced at Everton.
