The new Star Wars film is still ten months away, but the rumour mill is already in overdrive. There is no small amount of speculation out there, from preposterous suggestions to very credible potential spoilers - including one major one that has been doing the rounds this week (Google it if you must).

While the sheer amount of contradictory rumours out there means that at least some of them are inaccurate, JJ Abrams has now confirmed that some of them are true.

In an interview with BBC Radio 5 live's Colin Paterson, the director and co-writer of the much-anticipated sequel said "we obviously do the best we can just to preserve the story for the audience but it doesn't always work. There are a ton of rumours some true some false, but I'm grateful for anyone who'd want to read a spoiler because it means they care"

"I know how it feels as a big Star Wars fan," he added.

Abrams is no stranger to rabid fan speculation, given his role in the likes of Lost. He has previously expressed regret that he kept the real identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's character in Star Trek: Into Darkness secret, despite fans having guessed well before release that he would be appearing as the iconic series villain Khan. "I think it probably would have been smarter just to say upfront ‘This is who it is,'" Abrams told MTV News.

Definitive information on The Force Awakens remains sketchy, with plot and character details being drip-fed to fans. So we can all expect much more rumours - some true, some total fabrications - between now and December.
