Former US Open golf champion Jim Furyk has been confirmed as the next USA Ryder Cup team captain.

He will lead the team in Paris next year for their defence of the title.

Furyk has plenty of experience at Ryder Cup level, having played in nine editions of the competition against Europe.

The European team will have Thomas Bjorn as skipper.

The 2018 Ryder Cup will take place in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Île-de-France, on the ouskirts of the French capital Paris from September 28th to 30th.

Furyk had been keen on the task, having said, "I would love to have that job" as he awaited the USA selection committee's decision on the captaincy.

He will hope to emulate the success of Davis Love III who led USA to glory in the 2016 Ryder Cup after beating Darren Clarke's Europe, to end an eight year wait for victory.

Furyk saw Love's work first hand as one of the US vice captains alongside Steve Stricker, Tiger Woods and Bubba Watson.

Bjorn was quick to congratulate Furyk on his appointment as captain.

"I have known Jim for many years and as well as being a worthy opponent and a tremendous competitor, I know he shares my passion for The Ryder Cup which ensures it will be a fantastic contest when our respective teams meet at Le Golf National in 20 months’ time," said the Danish golfer.
