Former Leinster, Munster and Connacht centre James Downey has confirmed that he will retire from rugby at the end of the season.

The 35-year-old won his only Ireland Test cap against Canada in 2013 but he also helped the Ireland A team to the Churchill Cup in 2009.

Over a 13-year career, Downey also played for Glasgow, Northampton Saints and Wasps where he is currently on the books.

"I am one of the lucky ones who can finish on my own terms, not having it cut short like so many do. I've loved every minute along the way and been fortunate to have had a few successful years too, but now I am looking forward to starting the next chapter in my life," he said in a statement on Wasps' official website.

The one-time Ireland cap will now start a career in the financial world according to the Irish Independent.
