Christina Desmond secured at least a bronze medal at the European Elite Women's Championships in Bulgaria today.

The Cork middleweight earned a unanimous decision victory over Russian opponent Oksana Trofimova in the quarter-finals with one judge awarding her a 10-8 round.

This result ensures that Desmond will join Katie Taylor and Clare Grace as the only other female Irish boxers to medal at this event with Taylor the only one to progress to the final.

The southpaw now has a semi-final to look forward to on Tuesday where she faces French fighter Maily Nicar.

Elsewhere in the Irish team, there was disappointment for Grainne Walsh and Moira McElligott, who both missed out on medal finishes after losing their respective quarter-finals.

Walsh lost out to Saadat Abdulaeva of Russia via split decision while McElligott suffered a unanimous decision loss to Nalalya Samokhina, also of Russia.
