Fionnuala McCormack finished second in the Great Edinburgh Cross Country 6k, 21 seconds behind European cross-country champion Yasemin Can of Turkey.

McCormack equalled her placing at last year's event by overtaking Meryem Akda, who finished second behind Can at the recent European Cross Country Championships.

Both Can and Akda are natives of Kenya but availed of a rule which allows them to declare for Turkey, something which prominent figures in athletics, including McCormack, have condemned.

After the European Championships, she said:

"I don't think people should be just allowed to just hop countries whenever they feel like it, because it's easy."

McCormack boasts an impressive record at the Edinburgh Cross Country race, having previously taken the gold medal twice in recent years.

Speaking to RTE after this year's race, she spoke of her love for this course.

"It was tough, but good. I definitely enjoyed myself more than I enjoyed the Euros, partly because of the course and partly because I was feeling better."

"I love it here – I have ran here so often and out on the course it’s like home support there were so many people cheering. It’s such a great atmosphere and a great race to be part of."
