Manchester United have made an improved offer to David De Gea in an attempt to keep him at the club beyond his current deal.

The goalkeeper's existing contract is due to expire at the end of next season and talks over new deal have been running for several months now.

It is understood that the new offer from the club would make the 28-year-old the highest paid netminder in world football.

De Gea was on the verge of leaving Old Trafford for Real Madrid back in 2015 but the deal collapsed because the necessary paperwork was not submitted in time.

Links to Los Merengues have never gone away while Juventus and Paris Saint Germain are also thought to be admirers.

United striker Marcus Rashford agreed to a new deal this week and it is hoped he will be joined by De Gea in committing his long-term future to them although they will have to stump up the cash.

The Spain international is thought to want parity with the highest earner at United, Alexis Sanchez who is reportedly making a basic salary of £390,000 per week.

Will Harry Maguire play with David De Gea next season?

It could be a very expensive summer for United with Leicester City playing hardball over the proposed transfer of Harry Maguire.

The Foxes are thought to be willing to let the England centre-back go this summer but turned down the first £70 million offer from United and are looking for something closer to £90 million.

Reported interest from Premier League champions Manchester City is also helping to push up the cost of Maguire's transfer.

There have also been reports in Italy that United have agreed personal terms with Bruno Fernandes but that they cannot reach an agreement with Sporting over a fee for the player.

The Portuguese club want more than the reported £50 million offered by United for their in-demand 24-year-old playmaking midfielder.
