The lack of undisputed English starters in the Premier League has been a bone of contention for observers of the Three Lions in recent years with the influx of foreign players.

Yet would also imagine that many Man City fans would not lament James Milner's bench-warming despite his admirable versatility, while the same could be said for many other players.

But how would England's team look if selection decisions were based on fans' perceptions of them at club level?

Beat Your Manager Fantasy Football app has been able to get into the mind of supporters to see which English players should be undisputed starters at club level. And from the 23-man squad Roy Hodgson named, this is how that would translate into a starting XI:

West Brom fans may have more trust in Ben Foster than City fans do in Joe Hart, but in direct competition, Hart would be the man to come out on top.

The defence is an area where most players are not undisputed first picks at club level from a fan perspective with Leighton Baines, Luke Shaw and Phil Jagielka the only players in the 90 per cent range.

Meanwhile, soon-to-be Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert is the most popular English forward among club fans, although Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney are also hugely popular among Liverpool and Man United fans respectively, which suggests that in a straight fight, the latter two would be the obvious starters.

The likes of Jack Wilshere and Hart have dipped in popularity however as the season has worn on.

Beat Your Manager! Fantasy Football is an app similar to “Football Manager for live football”, where you manage your favourite Club and pick lineups, bench, formations and substitutions, all in real-time. When fans play the game, the Beat Your Manager team can get a picture of the popularity of different players, by looking at how frequently they are selected for the lineup.
