Paul Galvin’s retirement from inter-county football brings an end to one of gaelic football’s most decorated, controversial and entertaining careers. Galvin’s loss will surely be felt across the country when Kerry line out for the big summer occasions without their traditional number 10, but it is in Kerry that Galvin’s decision will evoke the most emotion and elicit the most conversation.
Off the Ball spoke with Radio Kerry’s legendary football commentator Weeshie Fogarty today to discuss Galvin’s decision. Weeshie spoke of his admiration for Galvin and the hole his departure leaves in Kerry football.
‘Paul Galvin added immensely to Kerry football. He brought something very unique, something very different than most Kerry footballers.
‘His work rate and his attitude and his never say die spirit...I would say, without fear of contradiction that he played a huge part in those All-Ireland wins he was involved in and maybe, maybe, without him they mightn't have won them, because when football was changing and the style of game was changing, he brought that style to Kerry.
‘I don’t think we’ll ever see an individual, a character or a person or a footballer like Paul Galvin again,’ Weeshie said.
