Hundreds of gardaí deployed in Dublin ahead of Ireland v England match

400 members of An Garda Síochána will be out in force today as Ireland take on England in a friendly football match at the Aviva stadium in Dublin.

When Ireland and England last met in Lansdowne Road in 1995, riots instigated by an English hooligan faction marred the occasion.

Gardaí made 43 arrests on the night and 20 people were hospitalised.

Up to 5,000 England supporters are expected in the city for the match today but only 3,000 have tickets.

Security efforts are expected to be tight today, though a repeat of 1995 is not expected.

To minimise the pre-match consumption of alcohol, the kick-off time has been brought forward from 7.45pm to 1pm.
