Huddersfield have beaten Reading 4-3 on penalties to win a dramatic Championship playoff final.

Christopher Schindler was the hero, scoring the crucial spot kick to take David Wagner's side into the Premier League for the very first time.

A tight game ended goalless after extra time, although both sides having chances to win it late on.

Huddersfield are back in the top-flight for the first time in 45 years and could make a reported £200 million with their elevation to the top flight.

The penalty shootout did not start well for Huddersfield as Michael Hefele missed their second kick to allow Jaap Stam's Reading to go 2-1 up.

But Liam Moore fired his penalty over the bar for Reading which allowed Huddersfield to level it up at 3-3.

And Jordan Obita's miss allowed Schindler to score the promotion clinching penalty.

It has been a fairytale rise for a club that did not emerge from the third tier until 2012, and having even found themselves in the bottom tier of the Football League during the 2003-04 season.

Huddersfield's greatest period of success came in the 1920s when they won the league three years in succession from 1923-24 to 1925-26.

They also won the FA Cup in 1922.
