Yesterday, the president of the German football federation announced his resignation due to the controversy generated by a payment made to FIFA.

A sum of €6.7M was transferred from the German FA to scandal-hit FIFA back in 2005, with allegations that it was used to bribe officials as part of Germany's ultimately successful bid to stage the 2006 World Cup.

Wolfgang Niersbach has insisted that he was not involved in the payments but that he is stepping down to protect the federation.

Meanwhile, German football great Franz Beckenbauer has been asked to explain a draft contract to ex-FIFA official Jack Warner.

German football writer and The Guardian Bundesliga correspondent Rafa Honigstein joined us on Off The Ball tonight to discuss those stories and how they might play out.

"We do know, what has emerged only today, is there was an attempt by the German FA, with Franz Beckenbauer being one of the signatories, that provides some sort of contract for CONCACAF and Jack Warner for financial assistance and that was four days ahead of the vote. So no evidence that this was actually followed through but strong evidence that they were at least trying or thinking about doing something in order to secure the vote," he said, before discussing the payment issue.
