James Garner starred in iconic shows such as “Maverick” and “The Rockford Files,” and film blockbusters “Victor/Victoria” and “The Notebook.”
Garner came to fame on television as the laid-back Bret Maverick in the 1950s western but he played almost all the standard movie and television roles — cowboy, soldier, detective, astronaut, race car driver.
Garner was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 1985 romantic comedy “Murphy’s Romance” with Sally Field.
To a new generation of viewers, he became known as Ryan Gosling's older self in 'The Notebook', the 2004 tearjerker..
Of all his work he said he was most proud of the anti-war film “The Americanization of Emily”, made in 1964.
Garner died on Saturday night at age 86 from natural causes.
His wife, Lois Clarke, and daughter Greta survive him.
