Sepp Blatter's revelations that FIFA agreed on Russia hosting the 2018 World Cup before a vote even took place is causing ructions in the football world.
In an interview with the Russian news agency TAAS, Blatter revealed that; "For the World Cups it was agreed that we go to Russia because it’s never been in Russia, eastern Europe, and for 2022 we go back to America. And so we will have the World Cup in the two biggest political powers."
“And everything was good until the moment when Sarkozy came in a meeting with the crown prince of Qatar, who is now the ruler of Qatar”‹. And at a lunch afterwards with Mr Platini he said it would be good to go to Qatar. And this has changed all pattern."
Martyn Ziegler, Chief Sports Reporter with the Press Association has been covering the numerous FIFA scandals and spoke to Off the Ball last night about the latest bombshell.
"Behind the curtain talks" took place according to Blatter's spokesperson Klaus Stohlker, Ziegler was told before the vote took place. The main issue around the bids seems to be around the 2022 vote, as the intention was to give the tournament to the United States before some French influence helped Qatar win the hosting rights.
Ziegler thinks the news will have "an effect on the future" of how World Cup bids will be decided. "Lessons are going to have to be learned" where a fair and proper bidding process will take place.
