Diego Costa could be set for a spell on the sidelines after what looked like a nasty kick to the ribs of Liverpool defender Martin Skrtl.

Referee Mark Clattenburg was directly in front of the incident and awarded Skrtl a free kick but kept his cards in his pocket with little more than a warning for the Chelsea striker.

BT Sport, who employ Howard Webb as a consultant during games to assess situations such as this for the benefit of fans, was certain of what he would have done in the instance. He also provided information on what he believes the FA will do next, which includes an unlikely ban for Costa.

"The second action is a clear act of violent conduct. Mark Clattenburg is pretty close and is in a good position and it's difficult to say that he hasn't seen this.

"Normally the FA won't take action when the ref is looking at it. But just because he is looking in that direction it doesn't mean he is focussed on that act of violence, and he can't have been because he didn't see the kick and didn't give a red card.

"I doubt that the FA will take action because Mark is looking in that direction and it is not off the ball. But it is a clear red card and Diego Costa is a lucky boy on that occasion."

Costa has struggled of late with both Chelsea and Spain but with Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao offering little improvement in attack, Chelsea will be hoping that the FA turn a blind eye to the behavior of Costa.
