Everton midfielder Darron Gibson is to have surgery after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage during last night's World Cup qualifier for the Republic of Ireland.
The midfielder was carried off in the first half against Kazakhstan after an awkward challenge.
He has now been assessed by the Merseyside club's medical staff on his return to his club.
He damaged the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
The good news for the 25-year-old is that he did not suffer additional damage, but Everton's medical staff will not know how long he is likely to be out for until after the operation
A long-term absence would be a blow for both Everton and Ireland.
