Gianfranco Zola has resigned as manager of Birmingham City, just four months after being appointed to the role.

The 50-year-old has led the club to just two wins in 24 games since his arrival.

His departure comes after today's 2-0 defeat against Burton Albion, leaving Birmingham just three points above the relegation zone with three games remaining.

The announcement of Zola's resignation was published on the club's official Twitter account an hour after the final whistle.

Zola succeeded Gary Rowett as the Birmingham boss in December, shortly after Rowett was sacked by the club. The Italian's contract with Birmingham was originally intended to run for two and a half years.
