Ten years and one day ago, Liverpool faced a similar predicament to the one they find themselves in tonight.

This time they need to beat FC Basel to progress to the Champions League last-16.

Similarly, the 2004-05 group stage saw the Reds needing to overcome Olympiakos to make it out of the group.

Steven Gerrard came up with the goods in dramatic fashion in a goal you can watch below.

But where would it rank among the Liverpool captain's most vital European goals for the club?

5. Atletico Madrid 2008

Gerrard was on fire during the 2008-09 group stages as Liverpool topped a pool involving Atletico Madrid, Marseille and PSV.

He scored in four of the six matches, to rack up a tally of five goals.

But arguably the most important was an equaliser deep into stoppage time at home to Atletico which ultimately proved crucial as Rafa Benitez's side topped the group.

Gerrard showed a cool head to convert a penalty five minutes into stoppage time to salvage a 1 - 1 draw.

4. Marseille 2008

Earlier in the 2008/09 group stage, Gerrard came up trumps with a brace in a 2 - 1 win over Marseille.

The goals - particularly the 32nd minute clincher - helped the Reds get their group off to a win and also saw them come from 1 - 0 down after Lorik Cana's opener for the French side...

3. Arsenal 2008

Another penalty in the previous season's tournament helped Liverpool reach the semi-finals.

Drawing 3 - 3 on aggregate with Arsenal during the second leg of a quarter-final tie, Liverpool were on the way out of the Champions League with five minutes to go when Gerrard had the chance to put the Reds ahead again from the spot.

He made no mistake to stop the Gunners' momentum and to set Liverpool on their way to the next round after an exciting all-English tie...

2. Olympiakos 2004

It's easy to forget that the journey to Istanbul for the Champions League win was almost as exciting as the final itself.

Indeed, if it was not for this last minute winner against Greece's Olympiakos ten years ago, Liverpool would not have made it out of the group:

1. Istanbul 2005

Nothing beats scoring in the Champions League final for your hometown club. It was a vital goal as well. 3 - 0 down to Milan after half-time, Gerrard's header started the fightback 10 minutes after half-time.

The rest as you say, is history...
