Formula 1 organisers may be set to abandon the new qualification format after only one race.

Lewis Hamilton finished on pole ahead of Mercedes' team-mate Nico Rosberg with Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel in third place. Kimi Raikkonen completes the front two rows in Melbourne.

The new qualification format sees cars eliminated at regular durations throughout three qualifying sessions before two drivers remain fighting it out for pole position. Or at least, that was the plan. In Melbourne, there was no action fo the final three minutes.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has admitted the format may return to how it was in 2015 ahead of next month's Bahrain Grand Prix. "If we go back, Mercedes would be first and second. What I don't want to see is where you and I could predict how the grid is going to be for the start of a race, and how that race is going to finish."

Despite finishing second in qualifying, Nico Rosberg is not a fan of the new method. "It's good to try something but it hasn't worked - so we should go back."

If the changes are introduced, Formula 1 bosses have two weeks to implement them ahead of the season's second Grand Prix in Bahrain.
