A late, late goal from Sadio Mane led Liverpool to a 1-0 win away at Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season.

With the clock ticking in a lengthy injury time period of eight minutes, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge cut inside from the right and fired a low shot past substitute Joel Robles.

However, the ball came back off the post and Mane was in the right place at the right time to score his eighth goal of the season and claim the derby bragging rights for Liverpool.

The result lifts Jurgen Klopp's side back up to second, one point above Manchester City and six off Premier League leaders Chelsea.

It had otherwise been a match rich on industry but lacking in clear cut chances for either side.

Everton, who started the first half well, however did suffer a pair of injuries during the encounter as Ireland midfielder James McCarthy was replaced at half-time by Gareth Barry after picking up a muscular problem shortly before the break; a collision early in the second half saw Marten Stekelenburg unable to continue as Robles came on in goal.

The Toffees stay ninth on 23 points.

Liverpool's next fixture is a home clash against Stoke City on December 27th, with Everton travelling to Leicester City the day before on St Stephen's Day.
