Danny Welbeck came off the bench at Carrow Road to score the only goal of the game for Manchester United in their 1-0 win over Norwich.
Norwich could feel aggrieved to come away from the game with nothing, having exerted extended pressure on United for long spells and had the champions hanging on for the win at the end.
The most remarkable result of the day was Hull City’s 6-0 win over Fulham. The game had been 0-0 at half time but a second half onslaught from Hull, including Tom Huddlestone’s first goal in over two years, saw Steve Bruce’s side score 6 goals in a little over 35 minutes at the KC Stadium. Elmohamady Boyd, Huddlestone, Fryatt and Koren with a brace, were on the scoresheet for Hull.
Manchester City were given a stern test at home against Crystal Palace. City were held to 1-0 and needed Joe Hart to be at his best on several occasions to hang on to the win. After the game Edin Dzeko, the scorer of the game’s only goal, commented;"It was a hard game, maybe the toughest at this stadium in the Premier League this season. It was the last game of 2013 and we wanted to finish with a win."
Aston Villa got their first Premier League point in 5 games with a 1-1 draw with Swansea. Gabriel Agbonlahor scored for Villa after 7 minutes but Roland Lamah equalised for Swansea on 36 minutes.
In the afternoon’s early kick off West Brom and West Ham played out a 6 goal thriller. Nicolas Anelka scored twice for the Baggies but his performance has been overshadowed by claims that he made an anti-Semitic gesture in his celebration.
West Brom head coach Keith Downing has denied the gesture was anti-Semitic and has said the striker is surprised by the reaction after the game.
Anelka appeared to perform the ‘quenelle’ salute, a gesture made famous by French comedian Dieudonna and linked to anti-Semitism in France. Downing however insisted that Anelka was just dedicating the goal to the comedian.
"It is dedicated to a French comedian he knows very, very well. He uses it in his act and I think speculation can be stopped now, it is absolute rubbish really.
"He is totally unaware of what the problems were or the speculation that has been thrown around, he is totally surprised by it,” Downing said.
