Sligo's Mona McSharry has finished in eighth place in the 100-metres breaststroke final at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 20-year-old clocked 1:06.94 in what was the first Olympics final for an Irish swimmer in 25 years.

American teenager Lydia Jacoby took gold and McSharry says she's gained valuable experience ahead of the Paris Games in 2024

“It definitely felt like a good race,” the former World junior champion said after the race. “Anything sub 1:07 is good in my mind. The worst that could happen was that I could finish eighth at the Olympics and honestly, that’s not a bad result for my first event."

It was McSharry's slowest of three swims this week but she's happy with her performance overall.

"This is my first event ever in the Olympics and I’ve made a final, with the past year and a half that everyone’s had, it’s unbelievable.

“Thank you to everyone who got up to watch it, and for supporting me. Making a final was my target for 2024, so we’re going to have to sit down and make some new targets! It’s amazing.”
