Damien Duff’s A League career is reported to be over following “a bizarre double injury” for the former Ireland winger.

Fox Sports Australia report that Duff has both strained ankle ligaments and ruptured a tendon in his calf while playing for Melbourne City against Phoenix. The former Chelsea star limped off after just eight minutes.

“Hopefully the injury won’t be too bad — we have to wait and see — but it doesn’t look good,’’ coach John van’t Schip told Fox.

Duff has so far been a big success in Australia, appearing in all but one of City’s games thus far and scoring and assisting five in that time.

“He said he felt something snap and then he couldn’t walk or put any pressure on it. That’s not a good sign.

“Damien is a big part of our game plan.’’

Melbourne City have refused to comment on Duff’s condition, but are reported to be looking into signing a replacement.

Duff is signed to a one-year deal but could now miss the remainder of that contract with injury.

Duff has previously expressed a desire to finish his playing career in the League of Ireland.
